really appreciate DeviantArt's new art theft detection tool to help you hunt down art theft, but hahahahaah this sure sucks

can't sleep, time to redraw my old Gaia adoptables and long for a simpler time

drawin' some rocks

All my stream art from Lightbox this weekend, what an absolute blast!! Spooky characters with @nicholaskole, historical Merida and Haunted Mansion cast members, and a WHOLE lot of Neopets from my ex-TNT stream with Snarkie and SoupFaerie.

Can't wait to do more of this in the future, it was such a blast! πŸ˜„πŸ’š

My schedule for Lightbox Expo this weekend! It has somehow been 20 years since I started at Neopets and 10 years since I started my princess series, so we're celebrating the inexorable march of time this year

can't stop thinking about Stephen Graham Jones'The Only Good Indians since I read it over new year's. Just full to the brim with gorgeous horror/slasher imagery that I can't get out of my head, so this piece is probably the first of several. :D

To anyone who saw this and loved it and ended up reading the book, It's the release day for Stephen Graham Jones' next novel, My Heart is a Chainsaw! It is a dense, chaotic love letter to slashers, and to obsessively nerdy teenagers who both are and aren't the hero of their own story, and I loved every minute of it. I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Jones, but you KNOW I'm gonna buy a proper hardcopy for myself now that it's out proper. :D

An absolutely fantastic interview with SGJ in GQ this week: https://www.gq.com/story/stephen-graham-jones-my-heart-is-a-chainsaw-interview

Y'all, my graphic novel Garlic & the Vampire comes out next month so I animated a lil teaser! Can't wait for you to meet Garlic, all her friends, and… well…the vampire :)

Pre-order links for major book retailers can be found here, but be sure to check your fav indie bookstore too!!!

was real worried that my birthday cake would be "inconsistent with the positive images and goodwill with which Baskin Robbins wishes to associate" but I'm IN THE CLEAR

My little papier-mΓ’chΓ© butterfly fish for the Oceans & Currents show at @gallerynucleus are up on the site! Super delighted with how these turned out.

I was determined to make something that wasn't digital and probably shouldn't have done that while I was also balancing a ton of other work, but WHAT THE HECK they're done 🐠🐠🐠

"all vegan leather is plastic" well i just found a tiktok

the brand is called desserto!! if you're interested in some ethical vegan leather products i'd definitely recommend them from what i've seen. Their instagram is here and their facebook page is here Here's a little more about it:

Thanks to its strong molecular bonding in which cactus plays an important role, Desserto® offers high resistance to abrasion, rubbing, tearing, tensile and a great durability, this organic, sustainable material is a great alternative to animal leather and other synthetic materials that are not environmentally friendly.

also it may be better than animal leather durability/performance wise, as well as being vegan and environmentally friendly;

Although animal leather is very resistant it is permeable and can even rot or crack if not dried quickly after it gets wet. Desserto® has competitive features handling humidity and liquids very well, it's fully customizable and breathable.

Here is a link to their bags/purses and here is a few more purses

i haven't personally tried out there brand but if any of you have please let us know how it is!

Just since I don't see people mentioning it in the comments, Desserto's cactus leather (who supplies other cactus leather companies like Black Nopal) is only 1/3 cactus, and is still 65% polyurethane: http://thecircularlaboratory.com/plant-based-plastic-leathers-an-update-according-to-science

They say it's PVC-free and pthalates-free and partially biodegradable as a way to conveniently hide that it's not plastics-free:

While it is possible to have a material that is recyclable as well as biodegradable and even compostable (able to be degraded under realistic composting conditions), the majority of "plant-based" leathers fall into a category which is neither – they are mixtures of plastics (typically polyurethanes) and natural materials. One particular example we highlighted was the example of Desserto, a material which we uncovered (based on its listing on a material database that has since promptly been deleted) was mostly polyurethane, with only a small amount of natural material mixed in.

One of my reinterpretation of andalites, from Animorphs.

I made this for Simon Lee's creature design class- I highly recommend it.

You can support my sculpture work and see my other (way more alien) interpretations on my page at any level: https://www.patreon.com/monarobot

I am a total coward who loves drawing hot, typical, Romas Kukalis-esque andalites, and so I am such a sucker for Mona's gorgeous, weird, alien designs that still feel so true to the book descriptions and the andalites' whole ✨vibes✨

Quick little video tutorial! This is a method I use to block in shapes when I'm fighting the urge to polish my lineart at an early stage, especially in rough concept art that doesn't actually need polished lineart.

I group two layers in photoshop—a rough sketch, and a flat color—and then carve out the negative space by painting into a mask on the group, instead of filling in the positive shapes. From there I can start painting and adding shading into that group, knowing that I've already locked down a good initial silhouette for the object/character:

image

It feels like oil painting, and I end up finding silhouettes/shapes in a way I wouldn't if I was obsessively cleaning up the linework first. Digital art has a tendency to veer towards cleanliness/polish, so I love finding little opportunities for happy accidents and a bit of mess!

I used it on my unicorn piece last month, for instance, which I think would have lost a lot of its dynamism and charm if I had worried too much about doing a full ink pass:

image

Hope this is at all helpful!  It's not a method I use 100% of the time, but it really helps move my process along when I do need it πŸ‘πŸΌ

I did the unicorn challenge over on twitter! The result is  You Can Tell Me to Die But You'll Have to Live With it. She is angry.

The various parts:

  • spiral tusk horn
  • styracosaurus frill
  • saiga head that splits into 3 parts
  • crab antennae -white goat eyes
  • fire mane
  • kudu body with pangolin scales, knives
  • tapir hooves
  • long luxurious tail
  • psychedelic colors
  • dies on command
