Just curious if any of the Black Aces get their day with the Cup? I know some were there for the parade, but I don't know what the limitations are for who gets the Cup for the day.
  2. I'd think not. Probably limited to the guys who get their names etched onto it.

Butler and Reinke shared it for a day so I'm guessing they will all get a day with it in some capacity.

    Wasn't Reinke a Black Ace?

Maybe only guys who played at least one game for the Blues this year?

It was announced that Stanley Cup is coming to Finland so I guess Husso will get to spend time with the Cup as well. Understandably they are keeping it quiet with the Black Aces, especially with those (e. g. Reinke) who didn't play a single game in the big league.
  7. What's the big deal? All the guys who were on the team get a day with the Cup. They were on the ice hoisting the trophy, too. There are plenty of days this summer. I'm confused why there is any surprise that the Black Aces are included.

It's not nearly the same thing as having their names engraved. But they should get rings too.

  8. I don't think they should get rings, be allowed to lift the Cup or have their day with it unless they qualified via games played in regular and postseason.

Not really into the participation trophy thing.

It's not a participation trophy. Everyone involved helped us win the cup this year. Do you think we could have done it without our call-ups from San Antonio? Who do you think helped prepare those kids for what was coming? Everyone chipped in and everyone deserves recognition.
  10. You make a valid point, Xerloris, but I stand by mine.
  11. Those guys worked their asses off with just as many practices and workouts as anyone. They kept themselves ready to play.

Someone can correct me, but salary is paid for regular season games. I think players aren't even paid for the postseason other than bonuses earned and per diem.

The notion that the extras didn't earn a share in the Cup win is kind of offensive. It's a small thing to give a guy a ring and recognize his sacrifice with a day with the Cup. And what better way to give a guy the taste for blood in the future, and want to be part of a Cup winner as a pivotal player on the ice? Getting your name engraved is the real honor. No one is getting that handed to them.

  12. Love the argument. Compel me.

You are correct, no salary for the playoffs. I don't have any issues with anyone having their day with the Cup in organization. I just haven't seen as much posted on twitter about it as the regular players and was just curious as to where the line is drawn.

As a side note, what a cool job Philip Pritchard has. He's been at it for more than 25 years and when he's not on the road, he is the Vice President and Curator of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. That guy could probably keep you entertained over a beer or three.

Interesting tidbit from the Athletic's mailbag

At what point in Game 7 against Boston did the Blues' extra players and the black aces get dressed for the end-of-game celebration on the ice? — Jim

They were in the press box for most of the game and went downstairs about midway through the third period to change into their uniforms and get ready.

I personally know a person in the Blues home office who had a moment with the cup. So office people + family got to drink out of the cup and hang out with it as a group.
  17. Did the Boston Black Aces get into their uniforms, too? I bet under usual circumstances they would have.
  18. I hope they post photos of Louie's day with the Cup.

(Even if they didn't really give Louie a day, that would be a marketing homerun to publish photos and a couple articles about him taking the Cup around town, maybe to a grade school or something.)

    lol no they didn't.

What did Mitch Reinke and Ville Husso do to help the Blues win the Cup?

I agree with CB. For guys like Butler and Nolan, sure. Give them a day with the Cup. I don't care.

But if you didn't play a single game for the team, you absolutely should not be involved.

  20. If you are Reinke and Husso do you want a day with the cup? I am not sure I would. The superstition is that, as a player, you don't touch the cup until you have won the cup. I can see guys who are retiring, and will never win it on the ice, like Butler and Thorburn, saying whatever. But Reinke and Husso still have time to make the NHL and actually win a cup as a player. I don't know if I'd want my first cup win that I actually contributed to be "been there, done that."

Jesus. can you imagine having that attitude and then never having the opportunity again.

They were a part of the team. You dont pass that up for a "what if"

  22. Its not much different from someone who just never had the opportunity period. They weren't a part of the team, not really in anyway that mattered. They were a warm body in practices, and called up more to give them an experience that might help them down the road than for anything special they brought at this point in their careers. Do teams who refuse to celebrate winning their conference trophy regret it if they don't go on to win the cup? If Robert Thomas invited Matt and Brady Tkachuk to come spend his day with the cup, do they? Do they regret it if they don't and never win? Sure they regret not winning a cup, but do they regret not partying with someone else's win? I don't think that is the regret. For me, I wouldn't want it if I didn't earn it. But I'm an odd duck, so take it for as little as it is worth.

I thought that. What if you had a close game and both clubs dressed their players out. What a disappointment for those guys to get dressed out only to have to shower for no reason*

(*Anyone who has played knows that even if you don't step on the ice but put on that equipment, you have to shower the funk off you)

I'd probably do something casual as a group with those guys so they get together and get their time with it as part of the club, but they don't need to take it wherever home is.
